National Heritage Week celebrates Ireland’s cultural, built and natural heritage. It brings volunteers, community groups and heritage enthusiasts to share their experience, knowledge culture and practices. The theme for this year invites you to explore the ways we are connected to each other through physical or cultural connections. Join the team at Lucan Library for a series of events taking place at the library throughout Heritage Week.
Saturday 17th August, A series of talks provided by the society of Old Lucan. All ages welcome to attend this free event.
10am to 11:30am The Society for Old Lucan presents The Finds Table where they will showcase some of the archaeological surface finds for you to look at, touch and examine. Bring along finds from your garden for ID, or your collection for others to view.
12pm-1:15pm Helen Farrell, chairperson of the Society for Old Lucan presents Hiding in Plain Sight a not-to-be-missed talk on Medieval Esker.
2pm-3:30pm Joe Byrne presents a talk n the Lucan Steam and Electric Tram operations from 1881-1940
Thursday 22nd August at 7pm, Seamus Cullen from the Pale to the Palace, a deep dive into the Irish Ancestral roots of the reining British monarch King Charles. The last Irish Royal Richard Wellesley, a descendent of the Colley Family of Carberry Castle, was the great-great-grand-father of the late Queen Elizabeth. Seamus will explore this family connection through the centuries.
Monday 26th August at 7pm, Historian Liz Gillis presents a captivating talk on the Women of the Easter Rising. Learn about how the role of women played both directly and indirectly in the Irish Revolution. The Independence movement could not have succeeded without their brave contribution.
Wednesday 14th August at 2:30pm join the team at Lucan Library for a Knight for Hire, an Irish History Show that’s perfect for ages from 7-12 years of age.
Saturday 24th & 31st August, 10:30am-12:30pm Scheider Gwei presents an introduction to Crochet for Children of all ages. Participants must attend both sessions. Bookings are essential via Eventbrite & can be made from 17th August.
